In short
Last updated October 15, 2026. Free and Sober should work for everyone who needs it, including people who use a screen reader, larger text, captions, or a relay service. We build accessibility in from the start, and we want to hear from you when something gets in your way. Write to support@freeandsober.com and we will work on it.
What we build in
In the app:
- Every button and control has a label and a role, so screen readers such as VoiceOver and TalkBack can read it.
- Buttons and other tap targets are at least 44 points, so they are easy to hit.
- Text uses your phone's system font and follows your larger-text settings.
- If you turn on Reduce Motion in your phone's settings, the app keeps its animations still.
- Important changes, such as a saved copy or a recording timer, are announced to screen readers.
- Every problem you can run into shows a plain sentence on screen, never just a sound or a color.
- The mentor works by message, and by voice. Voice is never required, and the mentor's voice comes with captions.
- Calling 988 or 911 from the app takes a clear two-tap confirmation, so a phone in a pocket never dials by accident.
On our website:
- Pages respect your Reduce Motion setting.
- Pages are built to fit a phone screen without sideways scrolling.
- Images that carry meaning have text descriptions.
Crisis help for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people
- You can text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org.
- You can call 711 for relay service.
- Wherever you have the mentor, messaging it is always available, with no voice needed. On a plan an organization's program gives you, the mentor is there by message too, and so are the crisis buttons.
