In short
Last updated October 17, 2026. This page applies from the launch of the Free and Sober app. Free and Sober has three monthly plans, bought through the App Store or Google Play. Essentials starts with a 3-day free trial: after 3 days, you'll be charged $12.99 a month plus tax, every month, until you cancel. Plans renew automatically every month until you cancel, and you cancel in your phone's store settings, which the app links to. Refunds come from Apple or Google, and Google Play sends refund requests made more than 48 hours after a purchase to us. Voice and avatar time with the mentor use voice minutes; messaging the mentor is part of every plan. If you stop paying, your safety tools, your count, your calendar, your Time Capsules and your data stay open to you. No ads, no countdown offers, and no surprise charges. Free and Sober is not available to residents of Utah, so plans can't be bought there.
Plans and prices
Prices are in US dollars and before tax. Sales tax is added at checkout wherever your state charges it on apps (6.35% in Connecticut). When you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, the store adds the tax and pays it to the state. Every plan includes the day count, milestones, four guided paths (Getting ready, The first 30 days, Staying sober and After a slip), the Time Capsule, your calendar, a private daily journal, meetings, the mentor by message, free backup, the app lock and widgets, the day count on your Apple Watch face, and the crisis tools.
Essentials: $12.99 a month
- A 3-day free trial, with 10 voice minutes for talking with the mentor out loud
- The mentor by message, with 10 open conversation messages a day
- The Time Capsule, 1 sealed at a time: when it opens, you can seal the next, for any day you pick
- The daily line, capsule prompts from the mentor and its memory, and the mentor to talk to when a craving hits: "Having a craving?" on Home opens a conversation with it
- Voice minutes: buy packs when you want to talk out loud
Plus: $19.99 a month
Everything in Essentials, and:
- Up to 3 Time Capsules sealed at a time
- 30 voice minutes every month
- 20 open conversation messages a day
- Every guided path, adding After the first 30, The first year and Week by week, to read or listen to, for as long as you subscribe
- Corner capsules: sealed voice messages from the people in your corner, each opening on one of your milestones, the one they pick
- Journal prompts from your mentor
- The Apple Watch app: check-ins, milestones and trends on your wrist
- Your Corner, with up to 5 people
Plus has no free trial. You can move to Plus any time, including during the Essentials trial.
Premium: $29.99 a month
Everything in Plus, and:
- 30 open conversation messages a day, and 120 voice minutes every month: 120 minutes of voice, or 40 minutes of video with the talking avatar
- Journal help: help putting your own words into a journal entry. Talk it through by message, or by voice using voice minutes, and the mentor puts what you said into an entry for you to edit
- Your Corner, with up to 15 people
Premium has no free trial.
Voice minutes
Voice minutes pay for time with the mentor by voice or with the talking avatar. Messages never use minutes.
Talking with the mentor out loud uses voice minutes, and packs pay for more. Video with the talking avatar is on Plus and Premium only.
- A minute of voice uses 1 voice minute.
- A minute of video with the talking avatar uses 3.
Packs of voice minutes
You can buy packs on any plan:
- 30 voice minutes: $4.99
- 100 voice minutes: $14.99
- 250 voice minutes: $34.99
How voice minutes work
- Monthly minutes come with Plus (30) and Premium (120). They are used first. They reset each month and do not carry over.
- Purchased minutes never expire. If your subscription ends, they stay in your account for when you come back.
- Trial minutes are a gift of 10 voice minutes with the Essentials trial. They end when the trial ends.
- No automatic top-ups. When your minutes run low, the app asks first, and each purchase is your tap in your phone's store. You can set a monthly spending cap, and the app never offers a top-up past it.
- Price changes apply only to new packs. A minute you already bought keeps its value.
- Cravings and crises never use voice minutes. A craving or crisis conversation never uses voice minutes, and the mentor's crisis response is never capped; other messages, a craving's included, count toward your plan's messages for the day. At a zero balance, it continues in messages, read aloud by your phone's own voice.
How the free trial works
- The free trial is on Essentials only, and it lasts 3 days.
- It includes 10 voice minutes, for talking with the mentor out loud.
- If you allow notifications, the app reminds you at least 48 hours before the trial ends, with the price, the day of the first charge and how to cancel. The Home screen shows the same reminder when you open the app in those 48 hours.
- If you do nothing, your Essentials subscription starts when the trial ends, at $12.99 a month, plus tax, and renews every month until you cancel.
- To avoid being charged when your Essentials trial ends, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. You can keep using the trial until it ends.
- If you buy Plus or Premium during the trial, the trial ends and your new plan starts. That is how Apple handles it; on Google Play, the store shows you the exact timing before you confirm.
How renewals work
- Your plan renews automatically at the end of each month, until you cancel. There are no yearly plans.
- Your store charges you for the next period. On iPhone, the charge comes within the 24 hours before the period ends, so turn off renewal at least 24 hours before.
- If a price changes, we tell you by email at least 21 days before it takes effect, and your store tells you too. We charge you a higher price only if you agree to it through your store. You can cancel before the new price starts.
- Once a year, we remind you by email that your plan renews every month, what it costs, and how to cancel.
- Your receipts come from Apple or Google. Each time your plan renews, we also send you a short note with the amount charged and how to cancel.
Changing your plan
You can move between plans in your store's subscription settings, or from the app's Plan screen on the You tab. A move to a higher plan usually starts right away. A move to a lower plan usually starts at your next renewal. Your store shows the exact timing and any credit for unused time before you confirm.
Pausing instead of cancelling
On Android, Google Play lets you pause your plan for up to three months instead of cancelling it, once any free trial is over:
- On the app's Plan screen, on the You tab, tap Pause or cancel. Or open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and tap Free and Sober.
- Tap Manage, then Pause payments. Choose how long, and confirm.
Your plan runs to the end of the month you paid for, then pauses. Nothing is charged while it's paused, and nothing in your account is deleted: what stays open without a subscription, described below, stays open, and everything else waits for you as it is. We send you one short note when the pause begins. Your plan starts again on its own on the day you chose, and Google Play charges you then. To start it sooner, tap Resume in the same place. While it's paused, resume it rather than choosing a plan in the app again, or you could pay twice.
On iPhone, the App Store has no pause. If you cancel, everything in your account stays, ready for when you come back.
Buying on our website (not offered yet)
We may also offer the same plans and packs of voice minutes on our website, at the same prices, in the United States. We don't offer them there yet. When we do, this is how it works:
- Stripe takes the payment on its own secure page, for Free and Sober Inc. We never see your card number. Stripe adds sales tax wherever your state charges it, and emails your receipt.
- Your plan or your minutes reach the app through RevenueCat, the service that keeps your plan from the App Store or Google Play. We give Stripe and RevenueCat a random ID made for billing alone, never your name or your account's ID.
- The Essentials trial is offered on the website only if you have never had a Free and Sober plan in any store: after 3 days, you'll be charged $12.99 a month plus tax, every month, until you cancel. We email you a reminder at least 48 hours before the trial ends. Changing to another plan during the trial ends the trial, and the new plan is charged at once.
- One plan at a time. If you already have a plan from the App Store or Google Play, change or cancel it there; we don't sell you a second.
- Renewals: your plan renews on the same day each month. Cancel any time before then, and nothing more is charged.
- To change or cancel a plan bought on our website, sign in to Free and Sober on the web, go to You, then Plan, and tap Manage or cancel. Your plan runs to the end of the month you paid for. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it. If you delete your Free and Sober account, your plan won't renew, and it ends when the account is deleted.
- If a price changes, we tell you by email at least 21 days before, and we charge you the new price only if you agree to it. If you don't, your plan ends when the last month at the old price does.
- Refunds for a purchase on our website come from us: write to support@freeandsober.com. We refund any charge made in error, or made after you asked us to cancel.
- The monthly spending cap you set for voice minutes holds for packs bought on the website too.
How to cancel
Cancel in the store you bought from, or on our website for a plan bought there. Deleting the app, or deleting your Free and Sober account, does not cancel a subscription from the App Store or Google Play. (A plan bought on our website won't renew once you ask to delete your account, and it ends when the account is deleted.)
On iPhone
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Free and Sober.
- Tap Cancel Subscription, then confirm.
You can also open the App Store, tap your picture at the top right, then tap Subscriptions.
On Android
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon at the top right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Tap Free and Sober.
- Tap Cancel subscription, and follow the steps.
The app's Plan screen, on the You tab, also takes you straight to your store's subscription settings.
Can't find it? Email support@freeandsober.com with "Cancel" in the subject line. You'll get the steps for your phone right away, and a person will follow up within 24 hours if you need more help. If you bought on Google Play, we can cancel it for you: ask us from the email address on your account, and we'll cancel it and confirm within two working days. We can't cancel an App Store subscription for you, because Apple holds it, but we'll make sure you know how.
After you cancel
You keep your plan until the end of the month you paid for. After that, your account moves to what stays open without a subscription, described below. You get one plain note that your plan has ended and what stays open. After that, we send no reminders to come back. We still send notices about your Time Capsules, such as when one opens, and any emails you turned on. We also send notices that keep your account safe, such as when a security setting changes, and notices we must send, such as changes to our terms.
Refunds
Apple and Google handle payments for Free and Sober, so refunds come from them, under their own policies. We cannot issue refunds for App Store purchases ourselves.
- iPhone: sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com, choose "I'd like to," then "Request a refund," choose a reason, then choose the purchase and submit.
- Android: go to your Google Play order history, find the purchase, and choose "Report a problem" to ask for a refund. Google handles these requests within 48 hours of the purchase. After that, or if Google asks you to contact the app developer, write to support@freeandsober.com. If you bought on Google Play and ask us after those 48 hours, we refund your most recent monthly charge if you ask within 7 days of that charge. We also refund any charge made in error, or made after you asked us to cancel. Otherwise, your plan runs to the end of the month you paid for.
One plan, one person
Each plan is for one person, on their own Free and Sober account. Plans are not shared through Apple's Family Sharing: a plan that reaches you through someone else's Family Sharing does not turn anything on in Free and Sober, so subscribe on your own account.
Restoring your purchases
On a new phone, or after you reinstall the app:
- Sign in to Free and Sober with the same email address you used before. Your count, your capsules and your data are all there. At launch, what's in your vault, such as your capsules and journal, opens once the app finds your key, you move your key from your old phone, or you enter your recovery key. Our Terms of Use explain where your key is kept.
- Make sure your phone is signed in to the same Apple Account or Google account you used to buy your plan.
- If your plan does not show, open the Plan screen on the You tab and tap Restore purchases.
If you move between iPhone and Android, sign in with the same email and your plan comes with you. You still manage and cancel it in the store where you bought it. At launch, Apple's and Google's backups don't carry your key between them, so to open your vault on the new phone, move your key from your old phone by scanning a code it shows, or enter your recovery key.
What stays open without a subscription
When your trial or subscription ends or is paused, or when the seat an organization paid for ends, these stay open to you:
- The crisis tools, always: the crisis bar, 988 and 911, your safety plan, and your trusted contact
- Your day count and progress, which you can still see
- Your calendar, reminders included
- Your journal, to read, search and export
- Every Time Capsule. A sealed capsule still opens on its day, and you can watch it and export it. At launch, playing it takes your key, with or without a plan.
- Your backup, kept for as long as your account exists
- Export and delete, any time
- Voice minutes you bought, kept for when you come back
At launch, your journal and everything else in your vault also open only with your key, with or without a plan. We can't open them for you, and if your key and your recovery key are both lost, nobody can. Our Terms of Use explain your key and your recovery key.
Your Corner pauses until you have Plus or Premium again. Nothing you built is deleted.
For organizations
How it works for members
- The organization picks the plan: Essentials, Plus or Premium. Redeeming its code turns that plan on right away, at no charge to the member. There is no trial, and members never enter payment details.
- Someone who already pays for a plan through the App Store or Google Play should cancel it in their store's subscription settings, or they will pay twice. The app reminds them when they join, but it cannot cancel a store subscription for them.
- The organization can move a member to another plan at any time.
- A full code never locks anyone out. New members still get in, and the organization is billed for them.
- The AI mentor is part of a plan an organization pays for, by message and by voice, never on video: while a member's seat lasts, their voice uses the monthly voice minutes of the plan the organization chose (Essentials has none), with no pack to buy and no shared pool. Everything else in their plan is theirs, and the crisis help stays on. A member who leaves the program, or whose seat ends, can use the mentor on a plan of their own.
Plans and prices for organizations
- The same prices a person pays: $12.99 per member a month for Essentials, $19.99 for Plus, $29.99 for Premium
- Every plan includes the organization's own documents in the app (the same for every member, never about one person), and every organization gets a dashboard of engagement counts, whatever plans its members have.
- $99 a month minimum, from the calendar month in which the service starts
- Meetings add-on, optional, only if you order it: video meetings your staff hold with members in the app. $29 a month for each staff member who ran at least one meeting that month, whatever their role. Each of them adds 20 meeting-hours to the program's pool for the month, and each hour started past the pool is $3. You pay only for staff who actually hosted that month; a month with no meetings has no Meetings charge.
- Monthly invoices. There is no yearly prepayment and no discount. The signed Organization Services Agreement controls if anything on this page differs.
Which accounts are billed
- A member's account is active from the day they join with the organization's code until the day the organization ends their seat.
- Every account that was active at any point in a calendar month is billed for that whole month, at the highest plan it held that month. There are no partial months. For example, someone who joins on the 30th appears on the invoice sent on the 1st, for the full month, even though they were active for only a day or two.
- The month in which a seat ends is billed as an active month. An account stops being billed from the month after its seat ends.
Aftercare
An organization can keep a member's plan going after they are discharged or leave its care, for any number of days from 30 to 365. Aftercare starts the day after the seat's last day. It is billed like seats, by calendar month, at that plan's price: each month after the seat's last month that aftercare reaches, even for one day, is billed as a full month, so a part month is billed in full. The organization sets a default length, can pick another for each member when their seat ends, and can lengthen or shorten aftercare that has started, but never so it ends before that day; a month already started stays billed in full. There is no prepayment: aftercare is invoiced monthly in arrears, for the months used.
When an organization's seat ends
A seat ends on the last day of the month unless the organization picks another day or ends it at once, and the month it ends is billed in full. The member sees the day the time the organization pays for ends, including aftercare, in the app as soon as the organization sets it. They keep everything they built. To keep a plan after that, they choose one themselves.
Invoices
- Stripe emails the organization an invoice from Free and Sober Inc. on the 1st of each month, for the month before. It shows member counts by plan, the $99 minimum, any aftercare months, and the setup fee, and, only if the organization chose them, the Meetings add-on (the number of staff members who ran a meeting that month, and the hours past the pool) and the Partner API fee, each as its own line. The setup fee is on the first monthly invoice after the service starts.
- Invoices never include member names.
- Every invoice is net 30: pay by bank transfer or card within 30 days. Automatic reminders are sent.
Setup and the optional Partner API
Both are part of what we offer organizations. The prices below are our standard published prices. An order form may state a different amount only to reflect the scope of the branding or integration work.
- Setup: $2,500 one-time; members are at the plan prices above either way. It covers full setup of the staff portal, hands-on training for the organization's staff, how-to videos for every part of the portal, join codes, the organization's name and logo on every code it hands out for as long as its agreement with us is in effect, its documents, schedules and meetings in the app, and its plan and aftercare defaults, followed by ongoing one-on-one support from its account rep for as long as the agreement is in effect. Care team isn't part of setup; it's available to every organization. It is all inside the Free and Sober app, not a separate app. Setup fees and Partner API fees are waived for agreements signed before January 1, 2027.
- Partner API: an optional add-on, available now, in two tiers: Connect, $249 a month, and Connect+, $750 a month, with one active production key per organization, plus a second key for up to 7 days while a key is replaced. Its fee begins when the program turns it on. Nothing is sent to a member through it, and nothing about them goes back, until that member signs a privacy disclosure in the app and gives staff the link code the app shows them; the organization's system then knows them by its own ID number, never by their app account. Connect lets the organization send appointments into the member's app calendar (locked to the member's own key the moment they arrive), change or cancel them, see accepted or declined if the member chose to share that, see what the member chose to share with the signed disclosure behind every answer, get the same monthly counts as the portal, receive signed webhooks with the Part 2 notice, send a day-before reminder that never includes the title or place, and get “Can we talk?” alerts that carry no member identity. Connect+ adds automatic seats and discharge, outcome reports for funders (totals only, for at least 11 people), scheduled care messages and broadcasts under the same rules as the portal, and Resources sync for links and documents. The member chooses what to allow and can withdraw at any time, and it stops that day, both ways. Time Capsules, corner capsules and the journal stay with the member: at launch, they will be encrypted with the member's own key, which we never have in a form we can use. Words, mentor conversations and crisis or safety events stay private to the member.
