Meet the mentors

Hear all twelve. Pick the one you'd want to talk to.

Each one is an AI, not a person, with an AI-generated face and a voice of its own. Every one tells you: “I'm an AI, not a therapist or counselor, and this isn't medical advice or treatment. It's not a substitute for clinical care.” Press play for a short hello, choose on day one, and switch any time.

J.W., an AI mentor with an AI-generated face, welcoming you to Free and Sober

AI mentor · AI-generated

Watch J.W.'s welcome · 2:06

A welcome from J.W.

The whole app, in about two minutes.

J.W. walks you through it: your privacy, the Time Capsule, your day count and badges, the calendar and the journal. Then he tells you what he is, and what he isn't.

The mentors are AI, not people, and their faces and voices are AI-generated. Every one tells you: “I'm an AI, not a therapist or counselor, and this isn't medical advice or treatment. It's not a substitute for clinical care.”

How a conversation works

It listens. You talk it through.

By message, voice or video, every conversation has the same shape. Here is one kind of night: a craving after twelve years sober.

1

It listens

It shows it understood, in its own words, before anything else. It listens more than it talks, and it doesn't hand out tips or advice.

2

It helps you reflect

One open question at a time, so you can hear yourself think: what's going on, what it's like, what matters to you. Like journaling out loud.

3

It follows through

It remembers what you told it, and what you said you'd do, and asks how it went, so you never start from zero. You can read and edit what it remembers.

4

It asks about your people

Your sponsor, a meeting, someone in your corner. The goal is more people in your life, not more time in an app.

Listening

Twelve years sober, and tonight I'm thinking about drinking. Feels stupid to even say.

It isn't stupid, and it isn't a failure. An urge after twelve years deserves attention. What's changed lately?

Work's been brutal, my dad's sick, and I stopped going to my Tuesday meeting.

That's a lot to carry, and it sounds like you've been carrying it alone. What do you miss about Tuesdays?

Honestly? My sponsor. I haven't called him in a month. Maybe I will tomorrow.

An example conversation with an AI mentor: not a therapist, counselor or sponsor, not medical advice or treatment, and not a substitute for clinical care.

Straight answers

What it will and won't do.

A mentor you can trust has to be honest about its limits. Here they are, plainly.

It will

  • Listen

It reflects back what you said, in its own words, so you know you were heard. It listens more than it talks.

  • Help you talk it through

One open question at a time, so you can hear yourself think. What you decide is always yours.

  • Remember what you tell it

Your reasons, your people, what you planned. You don't have to repeat yourself, and you can read and edit its memory.

  • Ask about your people

Your sponsor, a meeting, someone in your corner. It steps back as your circle grows.

  • Stay any hour

2 a.m., a holiday, the night before a hard day. A crisis conversation is never counted or capped.

  • Help you put it into words

Journal prompts when you want them, and on Premium a draft built only from what you said, for you to edit.

It won't

  • Give advice

Not medical, not dosing, and not what to do next. It stays out of anything about medicine: that's for you and your doctor.

  • Keep secrets

It never asks you to hide anything, and it will not promise secrecy when a life is in danger. It tells you that up front.

  • Pretend to be a person, a therapist or a counselor

It says it is an AI at the start and whenever you ask, and every mentor screen says: “I'm an AI, not a therapist or counselor, and this isn't medical advice or treatment. It's not a substitute for clinical care.” It has no story of its own and never claims one.

  • Shame you

A slip gets the same warm tone as the day before. No lectures, and never “you threw it all away.”

  • Sell to you when it's hard

No offers on slip or crisis screens. Ever.

  • Read your journal without asking

Your journal is yours. It reads an entry only when you turn that on for that entry, and you can turn it off any time.

When it's more than a craving

In danger, it points you to 988 and 911. Straight away.

If something you say sounds like danger, the mentor stops what it was saying and puts a human line in front of you: call or text 988, or call 911.

Every message gets the same crisis check first. The mentor follows a written crisis protocol signed by a licensed clinician, uses only fixed crisis lines a licensed clinician approved, and puts Call 988, Text 988 and Call 911 in front of you.

Our own code checks every message, not just the AI. When it hears danger, a fixed, careful script takes over.

It doesn't assess or counsel, and it stays. It tells you plainly that a person should help with this, never ends a conversation on a hard moment, and never hands you a number and leaves.

Text or call 988, and the conversation is still there when you come back.

It is honest about what it can do. It cannot send help, and it will never say it called someone when it hasn't.

Never metered. A crisis conversation is never counted or capped, even with no minutes left.

For help with drinking or drugs, SAMHSA's National Helpline is free and confidential, any hour: 1-800-662-4357.

Transcript

Read J.W.'s welcome

The whole welcome, word for word, for anyone who would rather read than watch. The video runs 2:06.

J.W., an AI mentor with an AI-generated face and voice. Recorded before launch: some privacy details he mentions may be out of date, so see our Privacy Policy for how your data is handled, and the craving button he describes is no longer in the app; a craving is a conversation with your mentor. What you say to a mentor goes to the AI provider that answers it, which may keep it for a time under its terms.

Hey. Welcome. Still deciding, just starting, or years in, I'm really glad you're here. I'm J.W. I'll introduce myself properly at the end.

Free and Sober is for every stage. Any substance. No shame.

First, your privacy. At launch, your journal and your Time Capsules are locked with your key, so we can't read them. No one at Free and Sober reads your conversations with me. Use it with confidence. Invite people to your journey by email, and choose exactly what each one sees.

On day one, you make something you can't open until day thirty. Your Time Capsule. A message to your future self. Video, voice, or writing. We recommend video. It stays sealed until its day. Then make more, and pick the day each one opens.

Your day count sits on the home screen, with a check-in that takes one tap. Earn badges from twenty-four hours to years.

When a craving hits and you need someone to talk to, one button is right there on your home screen.

Plus a private calendar with quiet reminders, a meeting finder, and a daily journal you can write or speak.

Now, as promised. I'm J.W., one of twelve mentors. I'm an AI, not a therapist or counselor, and this isn't medical advice or treatment. It's not a substitute for clinical care. Talk with me out loud, face to face on video, or message me in the app. I listen first, any hour, and always point you back to real people.

Pick me, or any of the other eleven. Choose the one you'd want to talk to.
